Joanna Kramer does not deserve custody of her son because she ran away from him and all her problems for year. If she is just going to run away from her problems then she is not ready to raise, care for and provide for a child. She also ends up giving custody away to Ted, because she knows that Billy will be happier with Ted because he has been there for him and spent all this time with him, and they have both grown to love each other.
